Piedmont Panels
Residential Conservation, Design
Materials: custom-cut glass, hand-painted stained glass, 3/8” and 1/2” flat lead, steel sashes
Nzilani conserved 13 gridded and quarry panels at a private residence in Piedmont. Aside from more typical restoration procedures, the project required a few custom treatments, incl. grinding and grozing glass pieces to correct prior construction/repair errors, adding stronger reinforcement bars for considerably improved structural integrity, and industrial sandblasting of the steel frames to remove multiple thick layers of paint and restore the functionality of the hardware.
A new heraldic medallion was designed by Nzilani’s Master Glass Painter, Armelle Le Roux, and integrated into the center of the staircase window. The design depicts acorns and foliage in a traditional heraldic style. A full-size template was drawn, glass was chosen and cut, and the glass painting and firing was completed in seven steps.
